ESPN was initially an abbreviation for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. The Satellite television channel is based in US. ESPN is owned as a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company, which operates as the major shareholders, and Hearst Corporation, which are the minor shareholders. The channel majorly emphases on sports-related programming including live and recorded event telecast.







ESPN’s current president is John Skipper, a position he has held since January 1, 2012.ESPN broadcasts mainly from studios situated in Bristol, Connecticut. The ESPN network also runs offices in New York City ;Miami; Seattle;  Charlotte; and Los Angeles.

Though ESPN is one of the most prosperous sports networks, it has been subject to criticism, which includes allegations of conflict of interest, biased coverage, and disagreements with individual broadcasters and analysts.


Criticism of ESPN

ESPN is sometimes accused of having favoritism towards certain sides. ESPN and the Atlantic Coast Conference have a rights deal which avails extra football, both men’s and women’s basketball and Olympic sports coverage on a diversity of platforms. This has stimulated recommendations that the network may have a bias based on financial inspiration.


Competitive analysis for has proved to be one of the most competitive sites in the world. The analysis based on sound competition shows that;

ü has netted a 33% market share of all unique visitors within sports sites ,this is an increase up from 30% in August- second place is NFL with a 21% share, then, Yahoo! Sports with a 20% share, and    Sportsline Sites with a 19% share.

ü has got a 23% market share of all pages viewed within sports sites – second place is Yahoo! Sports with a 22.6% share, followed by, Sportsline Sites with a 10% share and lastly NFL with a 9% share.

ü still upholds its leadership position with 15,534,000 unique visitors – summing up to 11.5% of all users

ü is number one sports site with a total of 10,806,000 unique men – which is mathematically 16.3% of all men

ü is number one sports site with a sum of 3,771,000 unique women – reaching 24.2% of all women.
